They are just as confusing now as they were in high school.

After becoming entangled with a particularly confusing boy who lived in New York, I sought the help of a psychic to tell me WTF was going on.

Reasons to Believe

I'm not New Age-y at all. I'd never consulted a psychic before and I don't even read my horoscope. But a good friend swore by this psychic who lives in rural Nova Scotia named Edna Aker . Six months before my friend met the love of her life, Aker not only predicted their meeting but also told her lots of details about him that were spot on.

Another friend of a friend, Amy who lives in Victoria, B.C., had also had a spookily accurate prediction about her love life. Amy had been single a long time, with no action whatsoever in years (and was convinced that she'd die a spinster) but visited two different psychics in a six-month period. Each told her how her love life was about to perk up.

"In October 2006 I went to a psychic that told me in around seven-to-nine months a man would come along. She said that I am very, very, cautious, but that this man was a good man and I should trust him," Amy says, admitting that she thought the reading complete baloney at the time.

However, in June 2007, Amy went to a tea-leaf reader. "She was extremely surprised that I wasn't currently in a relationship. She said that someone was coming soon, like next month. In July I connected with someone I knew from high school. It was long distance and only lasted about six weeks but it got the ball rolling," she says, "In October 2007, I met a most wonderful man. We're still together and two weeks ago he gave me a ring. So both predictions came true."

After canvassing friends and hearing lots of similar stories, it sounded like everyone I knew had visited with a psychic at some point, so perhaps it wasn't quite as Twilight Zone as I thought. After all, a recent Lavalife poll discovered that 12 per cent of men and 41 per cent of women had consulted a psychic regarding their love life. I decided to risk blowing $100 on an hour-long telephone reading with Edna Aker.

A Spooky Experience

When Aker phoned me for the reading I was pretty skeptical and nervous for some unknown reason. She told me that I wasn't to speak during the first part of the reading unless she asked me a direct question, but at the end I could ask her anything I wanted to. Straight away, the spirits started talking through Aker, and telling me stuff that was spooking me out with its accuracy in regards to my personality and some of the stuff going on in my life.

The big question I had, whether I would ever find love again, was answered immediately by the spirits Aker was channeling. She relayed that I was going to fall so deeply in love that I wouldn't believe it, that the next man would be wonderful and I would end up with two more kids fairly quickly.

She warned me that my ex was going to try to get me into bed again, because he thought he was a 'hot tomato' in the sack and I could be easily persuaded. Apparently very soon there were going to be two men and one woman chasing after me (!) and one old flame was going to try and come back into my life.

I listened fascinated as Aker passed on the spirit's messages, until it was my turn to ask questions. I told her I wanted to ask about a certain boy I was involved with and she asked me to only say his name and where he lives. I did, and very accurately she said, "He runs hot and cold, doesn't he? Well, if you've got the patience to put into him he could be a bit of fun but there's no chance of a relationship with him."

I asked about the old flame thing, which concerned me as my dating past probably consists of a 90 per cent loser ratio, but Aker said it looked positive and that person would be good for me.
