What Is It?
Those with the fetish are sexually aroused by people with amputated limbs. Within the community, they are often called devotees or admirers.
This fetish should not be confused with Apotemnophilia, which is the desire to be an amputee oneself.
Insider Quote:
"Most admirers have known of their attraction since they were very young and many of them have been ashamed of it for many years as well. I like to characterize the attraction as very much like the more socially acceptable attraction to hair color or breast size. It is an initial interest that draws the couple together but as with any relationship, there must be more in common between the two people for a relationship to develop." -- Jama Bennett, female amputee and Director of ASCOT-World (Amputee Support Coalition of the World).
Fun Fact:
The 1970 movie, Tristana, where an older guardian falls in love with his one-legged ward, played by Catherine Deneuve, helped to gel the devotee community. However, the 1993 movie, Boxing Helena, starring Julian Sands and Sherilyn Fenn, was seen as an abject failure within the community because it suggested that devotees were interested in actually performing amputations, which is definitely not the case.
