What Is It?
The attraction can also be to wearing the clothes and sometimes the attraction is just to the clothes themselves. Practitioners of this fetish are sometimes called rubberists. It is believed that part of the attraction to this fetish is the idea that the skin-tight nature of the clothing is seen as a second skin. This operates on three levels:
1. The second skin works as a mask or disguise wherein the wearer is freed from their normal inhibitions and is able to be a completely different person
2. Because the clothing is so form-fitting, wearers are viewed as completely naked
3. The clothing's constrictive nature is taken to be a method of bondage
Many rubberists are sexually aroused by the smell of PVC/rubber attire. Manufacturers of the clothing enhance this odor by infusing chemicals into the material. The huge number of manufacturers of PVC, latex and rubber wear suggests that there are far more rubberists than most people would believe.
According to the International Association of Rubberists, approximately 1,500 rubberists visit their Website each day. Still, those figures could be inflated; those wacky members of the Gothic community also incorporate PVC and rubber wear into their day-to-day attire but wouldn't necessarily self-identify as a rubberists of fetishists. Fashionistas maybe...
This fetish is very closely related to the leather, spandex, and neoprene fetishes.
Required Equipment:
Since almost any piece of clothing can be made with PVC/rubber, there's far too much to list here, but this will get you started: boots, girdles, masks, cat suits, gloves, cloaks, vests, gas masks, skirts, overcoats, etc.
Insider Quote:
"I feel very sexy when I wear latex and I feel that my body is perfect. It's funny how we look less tired in a red catsuit! :-) Apart from the look that latex gives, I also like its smooth texture and its sometimes sweet smell." -- Bianca Beauchamp, Fetish Model
Fun Fact:
With her skin tight costumes, the character of Emma Peel, from the television show, The Avengers, is often considered to be one of the patron saints of the rubberist community. Batman's nemesis, Cat Woman, is also a huge influence.
