When it comes to the opportunity to receive oral stimulation, however, most guys probably wouldn't worry about upsetting a religious stranger. Or a non-religious stranger. Or anyone else, for that matter.
The inaccurately named blowjob has been called one of life's great pleasures. It has been fetishized in both porn and mainstream movies, written about worshipfully by avowed atheist and Vanity Fair columnist Christopher Hitchens, and generated headlines, thanks to Monica Lewinsky who provided the presidential BJ felt 'round the world.
It's become such a common part of the culture, both in real life and in Hollywood teen sex comedies, it's difficult to believe fellatio was once regarded as something that other people (i.e. boundary-busting author Henry Miller) did.
Yet, as common as it has become, there are some things that separate a mind-blowing BJ from a simply good one (old joke: "Describe your worst blow-job." "It was great!").
For starters, forget everything -- or at least nearly everything -- you learned from porn. Lou Paget, author of How to Be a Great Lover: Girlfriend to Girlfriend Totally Explicit Techniques that Will Blow His Mind, says even popular porn stars agree.
Paget, at one of her seminars, was complaining about how "the messages women get from the adult film industry on how to perform oral sex are massively flawed." In a typical scenario, the L.A.-based sexpert was saying, the woman is on her knees with some guy ramming a penis into her, and she's not in control of the motion.
"I was saying, 'That's not what is happening in most people's bedrooms,'" says Paget. "And this woman stood up and said, 'I've gotta tell you, she's not lying. I am so-and-so, I was voted top new star by AVN [industry organization Adult Video News]. I am that woman, I am on my knees in front of a guy, he's ramming into me, my eyes are watering, I'm gagging, he's completely disconnected from me, I'm not even there as far as he's concerned, and I can't stop because the cameras are rolling. Trust me, I'm not enjoying myself.'"
Discomfort, gagging, lack of control, and fatigue are not conducive to a satisfying oral sex act for either partner. If the giver isn't comfortable and having fun, the receiver isn't likely to be, either.
To avoid much of the above, Paget recommends a combination of manual and oral activity. One technique she advises is forming a circle with thumb and forefinger, which is then sealed onto the lips. "If you have that sealed onto your mouth you don't have to have your lips wrapped over your teeth to cushion the skin of the penis," she notes.
"You take away the soreness of the jaw, because your mouth is not having to create the pressure, your hand is. Your lips don't get worn out because the ring is creating the pressure, and because the ring is there at the end of your mouth you are controlling the depth of penetration so you don't have to worry about the gag factor."
According to Paget, men say three factors make for great sensation during intercourse -- heat, moisture and pressure. The ring and seal, in combination with the mouth, creates what she calls "an imposter vagina."
