If your libido could do with a lift, you might want to examine your eating habits.

According to Marenna Lindburg, an environmental researcher and author of The Orgasmic Diet: A Revolutionary Plan to Lift Your Libido and Bring You to Orgasm, by eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones, you can feel sexier and achieve orgasm a whole lot easier.

Lindburg's diet is based on "four essential factors that influence and enable healthy sexual functioning in women." These factors include ensuring that the body has sufficient free testosterone (through an emphasis on high protein and taking zinc and magnesium supplements), balancing dopamine-serotonin levels (through increased Omega-3 intake), pubococcygeous (PC) muscle tone and healthy genital circulation (tackled through targeted exercise).

Although I've never had a problem feeling sexy, I decided to follow the diet in the name of research, and see what effect Lindburg's recommendations would have on my body and mind.

Eating the right stuff….
Primarily the diet involves taking very high levels of fish oils, a multivitamin, extra magnesium, zinc, iron and vitamin C. Lindburg advises a healthy diet that includes the right sort of fats (saturated and mono-unsaturated) and complex carbohydrates, much like the Zone or South Beach diets.

"The diet works by creating the right balance of hormones and neurotransmitter levels which effect the woman's mood so that she is more likely to reach orgasm," says Lindburg. "It is about getting all the chemicals in the body to optimal levels for physical arousal."

Avoiding the wrong stuff….
Lindburg advises against including soy in your diet if you want to rev up your libido and stresses that coffee is to be avoided. "If you must drink coffee, only drink a cup in the morning if you plan on having sex at night," she says. High carb meals and sugary treats are also a no-no, as they can cause serotonin levels to spike and ruin the essential balance of serotonin-dopamine.

The other libido killer, according to Lindburg, is hormonal birth control, which made sense to me. I long resented being on the pill and hate the idea that something artificial like that ruins our sex drive. Fortunately, as I'm not in any kind of relationship I'm not taking any birth control that could have lessened the effects of the diet.

Feeling tingly
When I interviewed Lindburg before starting the diet, she told me that the effect of following The Orgasmic Diet can be staggering. "I've had women tell me that they can't stop thinking about sex," Lindburg said. "Hot and heavy sexy dreams are common when following the diet closely, and many women find that their interest in sex goes through the roof."
